Inflatable implant vs. malleable implant

The choice depends on lifestyle, patient preferences, and surgeon’s recommendations. Inflatable implant

  • More natural functioning (flaccidity and erection on demand)
  • More complex manipulation requiring training
  • Mechanical risk of leakage or pump malfunction

Malleable implant

  • Easy to use, no mechanism to activate
  • Faster intervention and simpler recovery
  • Still semi-rigid, requiring manual positioning

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

How does a hydraulic penile implant work?

The implant consists of two cylinders placed in the corpora cavernosa, a pump housed in the scrotum, and a reservoir. By discreetly activating the pump, the cylinders fill and produce a rigid erection; a valve then allows the penis to return to a flaccid state.

Are sensations and orgasm preserved?

Yes. The implant only replaces the erection mechanism: glans sensitivity, orgasm, and ejaculation are preserved. Most patients and their partners report being very satisfied after the procedure.

Is the implant visible or detectable?

No. The implant is entirely internal and undetectable to the naked eye, even in the locker room. Only careful palpation of the pump in the scrotum could reveal it.

What is the lifespan of a penile implant?

Modern hydraulic implants typically last 15 to 20 years. In the event of mechanical failure, the implant can be replaced with a new prosthesis during a similar procedure.
